Translation of Collected Information

Design Method: Datavisualization

Processing (large amounts of) collected (scientific) data into an audio and/or visual representation.
This design method is often used in scientific studies, but it can also be used to create an artwork with the intention to reveal certain processes and aspects of our complex environment and make them visible and comprehensible.

Example: Flight Patterns

Aaron Koblin
The paths of air traffic over North America visualized in color and form.

In Aaron Koblin's 'Flight Patterns' we see an impressive animated visualization of air traffic over North America. Koblin selected the data that he wanted to use and 'asked' the computer to convert it into visuals, hence not exactly knowing what it will bring about with regard to form and movement.
